Our aim
Git Training aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA everywhere: the landing, Track and Lesson pages, the Lesson workbench with its Terminal, Live Graph and Explainers, sign-in, settings and Certificate pages.
What helps
- The Terminal is a standard text box labelled “Terminal command”. The up and down arrow keys step through the commands you typed, and Tab always moves on. Screen readers read each command’s output once, in order, as it appears. The Terminal’s own messages, its Terminal Notices (such as when a command isn’t supported), start with “Notice:”.
- Your progress in a Challenge is announced as it happens: each goal met or no longer met, the command count when it changes against Par, and completion. Nothing takes your focus away from the Terminal.
- The Live Graph has “Graph as text”, which shows the repository as structured text: HEAD, branches and tags, commits newest first, unreachable commits and folded history. “Goal as text” does the same for the goal. After each command that changes the repository, a short summary of what changed is announced; turn it off with the “Announce graph changes” setting.
- Explainers open paused, with Back, Play, Next and Replay buttons. In an Explainer, the left and right arrow keys step back and forward and Space plays or pauses. Each step’s caption and a description of what changed are read out, and Escape returns you to the Terminal.
- Keyboard: “Skip to Terminal” and “Skip to Challenge” links come first on a Lesson, and the site has no single-key shortcuts.
- Motion: if your device asks for reduced motion, animations are Instant. You can also choose Instant in the settings.
- Colour and size: nothing is shown by colour alone, text and graph lines meet the AA contrast ratios in light and dark themes, every control is at least 24 pixels across, and pages reflow to a 320-pixel-wide screen without scrolling sideways.
- Certificates: the picture you can download, and the preview shown when you share one, have text alternatives naming the Track.
How we check
- Automated checks (axe-core) run on every page, and on a Lesson workbench with a Challenge loaded, for every change to the site.
- Before each new set of Tracks is released, we go through the site by hand with NVDA and Firefox, and with VoiceOver and Safari.
The site has not been audited by an outside expert, and there is no formal conformance report (VPAT).
Known gaps
- Only NVDA with Firefox and VoiceOver with Safari are tested. JAWS, Narrator, TalkBack and VoiceOver on iPhone and iPad are not.
- The Live Graph’s picture has only a one-line description, and its commits can’t be focused. Use “Graph as text” to read and move through the repository with a keyboard or screen reader.
- The Terminal has no tab completion, for anyone: type each command in full.
- The downloadable Certificate picture is an image of text. The Certificate’s page shows the same details as text.
- The site is in English only.
Report a barrier
If something on Git Training is hard or impossible for you to use, please tell us at info@just-software.nl. Say which page it was, what you were trying to do, and the browser and any assistive technology you use. JusT Software runs the site and reads every report.
